Abu Dhabi company to turn UAE’s landfill waste into plywood replacement
As the world increasingly looks for sustainable solutions to combat climate change, companies in the UAE are taking action to offer innovative solutions. One such organisation is Abu Dhabi's Terrax, which is transforming the construction and events industry by turning landfill waste into a replacement for plywood.
Owned by husband-and-wife duo Theresa and David Wernery, along with their partner Cameron Cairns, Terrax is bringing technology from Brazil to the warehouses of Mussaffah in a bid to offer a more sustainable solution to developers and contractors. The company recognises the heavy toll that construction plywood takes on the environment, with the harvesting and manufacturing process causing air and water pollution. Moreover, shipping plywood to the UAE, where it is not made locally, is expensive and environmentally unfriendly. In many parts of the world, deforestation also has to occur to create the product.
Ms Wernery highlighted that plywood is frequently used in construction and events for stand building, and in construction, it is used for concrete pouring. However, plywood is single-use for events, and in construction, it can only be used six to twelve times before ending up in a landfill. Terrax's solution offers a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly alternative, reducing the environmental impact of the construction industry.
By turning landfill waste into a plywood replacement, Terrax is making a positive impact on the environment and offering a solution that benefits the construction industry. Terrax's work offers a glimmer of hope for sustainable solutions that can help combat climate change.
