Sultan Al Jaber to Lead the Charge Towards a Sustainable Future as Head of COP28

Sultan Al Jaber, the CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), has been chosen to lead COP28, the most important climate summit. This is a significant appointment, considering that he also runs Adnoc, one of the world's largest producers of oil and gas.

In the months before the signing of the Paris Agreement, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then-crown prince of Abu Dhabi, expressed concerns about the future of the country in the post-fossil fuel era. He wondered aloud about the fate of his sheikhdom at the end of the fossil fuel era. The sheikh's concerns were well-founded, considering the country's reliance on oil and gas for its economic growth and prosperity.

To address this issue, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan appointed Sultan Al Jaber, an Emirati renewables executive, to head Adnoc. This move was seen as a signal of the country's intent to shift towards renewable energy and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. It was a significant challenge for Sultan Al Jaber, given that Adnoc is one of the largest oil and gas producers in the world.

Sultan Al Jaber spent much of his career making investments in renewable energy and trying to build a zero-carbon city in the desert. He understood the importance of finding ways to sell energy without planet-warming emissions. His mission at Adnoc was to find ways to sell energy indefinitely, even if that meant doing so without emissions.

Under Sultan Al Jaber's leadership, Adnoc has made significant strides towards reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning towards cleaner sources of energy. Adnoc has launched a number of initiatives aimed at reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy. These initiatives include the development of carbon capture and storage technology, the installation of solar panels on Adnoc's facilities, and the use of hydrogen as a clean fuel.

Sultan Al Jaber's appointment as the leader of COP28 is a testament to his commitment to addressing the issue of climate change. It also highlights the UAE's determination to be at the forefront of the transition towards a more sustainable future. As the world grapples with the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the appointment of a leader from the oil and gas industry to lead a climate summit sends a strong message that the transition to a low-carbon future is possible, even for countries that rely heavily on fossil fuels for their economic growth.
