China and UAE Absent from G20 Meeting in Kashmir: Implications and Perspectives
The recent G20 meeting held in the picturesque region of Kashmir has garnered attention due to the absence of China and the UAE. This gathering, the first international meeting in the state since its reorganization into two Union territories in 2019, aimed to discuss important matters within the G20 Tourism Working Group. However, the decision of China and the UAE to skip the event has raised questions and implications for the overall dynamics of the meeting.
China's absence, as expressed by its Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin, was justified on the grounds of opposing meetings held on disputed territory. China firmly stated its position that it would not participate in any form of G20 meetings held in Indian-administered Kashmir. In response, India reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Ladakh, are integral and inalienable parts of the country, asserting that no other nation has the right to comment on their status.
The UAE's absence, alongside China, adds further intrigue to the situation. As a member of the G20 and a key player in the global tourism industry, the UAE's decision not to attend raises questions about the underlying reasons for their withdrawal from the meeting.
This absence of two influential countries poses challenges for the G20 Tourism Working Group's discussions and goals. The working group is focusing on vital priority areas such as green tourism, digitalization, skills development, MSMEs (micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises), and destination management. These areas serve as crucial building blocks for accelerating the tourism sector's transition and achieving the targets set for the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
While China and the UAE's absence may impact the diversity of perspectives and hinder collaborative efforts, the participating nations should remain focused on their objectives. The G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in Srinagar provides an opportunity for experts, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to share best practices, exchange ideas, and promote sustainable tourism. By leveraging the expertise of the attending nations, the meeting can still contribute to the advancement of the tourism sector on a global scale.
