Former US Secretary of Agriculture Commends UAE's Leadership in Tackling Global Food Waste
Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Dan Glickman, former US Secretary of Agriculture under President Bill Clinton, praised the UAE's significant role in combating global food waste during a high-level discussion hosted by APCO Worldwide in Dubai. The event, titled "Fighting Food Waste: Pathways for People, Planet, and Prosperity," shed light on the UAE's proactive efforts in addressing this pressing issue ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) later this year.
Mr. Glickman, who currently chairs APCO Worldwide's International Advisory Council, highlighted the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate, a joint initiative launched by the UAE and the United States in 2021. The mission aims to promote environmentally friendly and climate-resilient farming practices. The former Secretary of Agriculture emphasized the commitment of both nations in the fight against climate change and sustainable food production, with the initiative's funding reaching approximately $13 billion.
During the event, speakers from various organizations, including Procter & Gamble, Deliveroo UAE, The Waste Lab, and the University of Wollongong Dubai, discussed topics such as creating a circular economy to reuse food waste and the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving sustainability goals.
Addressing the audience, Mr. Glickman emphasized the significant impact of food waste on climate change, with approximately one-third of food produced for human consumption being discarded, amounting to 1.3 billion tons annually. He stressed the urgency for global cooperation in addressing food waste's impact on climate change, poverty, and hunger worldwide. As the UAE prepares to host COP28, he urged attendees to leverage this opportunity to work towards a sustainable future and ensure an abundant food supply for generations to come.
