The “Revive the Spirit of Mosul” Project

The UAE recently chaired a United Nations Security Council Arria Formula meeting with France, Cyprus and Italy on the protection of cultural heritage during armed conflict. During the meeting, Omar Al-Taweel, UNESCO Site Coordinator for the “Revive the Spirit of Mosul” initiative, provided an in-depth presentation on the history of Mosul and the importance of cultural heritage in the rebuilding of the city.

Mosul is a city with a rich history and cultural heritage, which was devastated by Daesh's attacks between 2014 and 2017. One of the most iconic structures destroyed was the Al-Nabi Yunus Mosque/shrine, which was bombed and subsequently demolished by Daesh in 2014.

The “Revive the Spirit of Mosul” project, launched in collaboration with UNESCO and the European Union, aims to reconstruct the ancient historical city. This initiative is not only focused on rebuilding infrastructure, but also on empowering residents as agents of change and participants in rebuilding the city through culture and education. It also seeks to develop the skills of young people, providing international experience in the field.

The reconstruction of cultural heritage is a key tool for building and sustaining peace, and for involving local communities in the process. It provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of cultural heritage, and to promote the values of tolerance and coexistence among nations.

The “Revive the Spirit of Mosul” project is just one example of the UAE's commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage. Through initiatives like this, the UAE is working to protect cultural heritage and promote peace and stability around the world.
