UAE's Support for Clean Energy: Pledging Investment in Romania's Nuclear Energy Project
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reaffirmed its commitment to clean energy by pledging its support, alongside partners from the United States, Japan, and South Korea, to invest up to $275 million in a nuclear energy project in Romania. Facilitated by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), the UAE's contribution will be directed towards the deployment of a NuScale Small Modular Reactor (SMR) in Romania, signaling a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions.
ENEC, leveraging its expertise in constructing and operating light water reactors, will play a vital role in essential aspects such as procurement, engineering, and project management. The announcement, made by US President Joe Biden during the G7 Summit in Japan, marks the first major initiative under the Partnership for Accelerating Clean Energy (PACE). PACE, launched at COP27 in Egypt, aims to mobilize substantial financial support, investments, and resources to deploy 100 new gigawatts of clean energy capacity by 2035.
The SMR project in Romania holds immense potential as it aims to replace a coal plant and provide reliable, clean baseload energy. By doing so, it will contribute to reducing emissions in heavy-industrial sectors and foster sustainable economic development. Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, the Managing Director & CEO of ENEC, highlighted the UAE's role as a global leader in large-scale nuclear programs and their commitment to supporting the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies in Romania.
